Big Island Vacations

Vacationing on the Hawaiian island of Maui is actually vacationing in two distinct biospheres.  The western part of Maui contains a mountainous area including 5788-foot high Pu’u Kuku, deep canyons where rainbows seem to grow like wild vines, and the highly developed leeward beaches skirting the town of Lahaina.

Maui’s much larger eastern area, known as Haleakala, contains a 10,023-foot high active volcano, desert areas border on an enormous rain forest, and Maui’s famous South Shore, one of the most beautiful beach resort areas on Earth.  Mali’s two landmasses are divided by central Maui, the location Kahului Airport.  The depression which is central Maui is responsible for the island’s nickname of the Valley Isle.

Maui’s remarkably diverse landscape is what makes it an all-in-one vacation Paradise.  Visitors to Maui can indulge themselves in pastimes ranging from hikes along tortured volcanic landscapes and snorkeling in calm waters as brilliant tropical fish dart about beneath them.  Maui also offers world-class shopping and dining, Hawaii’s first sugar plantation and old resort, and villages in which the ancient Hawaiian culture mingled easily with the 21st century.

Driving along Maui’s busy roads will take you past ancient “heaiu,” stone platforms once used in ceremonies of worship.  You will see the smoke stacks of abandoned sugar mills, and broadcast networks housed in the same brick structures which once sheltered missionaries.  A visit to the town of Lahaina will introduce you to Hawaii’s whaling past at the Whaling Museum, but it will also offer you the opportunity to attend a surf school and try your luck at hanging ten.  If you want to leave Hawaii having experienced an authentic luau, and not the touristy versions offered at most wired resorts, the Old  Lahaina Luau is the place to do it.

One of the most famous roads in the Hawaiian islands is Maui’s Road to Hana.  Its one lane bridges and frighteningly turns are legendary, but no more so than its use of waterfalls and thickly forested gullies plummeting down to the coastlines.  Driving the 55 miles of the Road to Hana will let you experience Maui at its pristine best, and the nerve-wracking part of the journey will be broken up with your frequent stops to leave your vehicle for photo opportunities.  You will pass countless roadside stands selling fresh fruit and flowers, available at bargain basement prices.  To patronize these stands is to contribute significantly to the local economy.

If you decide to travel the road to Hana, consider renting a 4-wheel drive vehicle because of the options it will give you.  When you arrive in Hana, having 4-wheel drive will let you keep going until you reach the Ohe’o Gulch.  Known for its seven mountain stream-fed pools, Ohe’o Gulch is a great place to park and enjoy a refreshing swim.  In a secluded area off the road about a mile past the Ohe’o Gulch is the final resting place of Charles A. Lindbergh.

Even without four-wheel-drive, however, you can cool off in the waters off Hamoa Beach, just two miles outside of Hana. 

The waters off Maui are the winter home of more than half of the Pacific Ocean’s humpback whale population.  After spending their summer is a rich feeding grounds of  the Arctic, the whales migrate south to the warmth of Hawaiian waters to breed and give birth.  Between the months of November and April, whale watching opportunities abound on Maui.  Whale watching cruises are allowed to come within 100 yards of these remarkable creatures.  You can also view the magnificent humpbacks atop MacGregor Point Lookout or while perched on the sands at the northern end of Keawakapu beach.

Mali is not an island which will reveal all its treasures in a single visit.  It is rain forests and volcanoes merit separate visits of their own, so when you plan your first trip to Maui, do not try squeeze in more than you can properly enjoy!

Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, not to be confused with the above mentioned National Historic Park, is another must visit attraction for those visiting Big Island. Here, you are provided with the perfect opportunity to explore and learn about the history of Big Island the Hawaiian ancestors who called the area home.

This Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site is home to the largest temple in Hawaii. The template plays an important role in the history of Hawaii. It once was a scared place of worship. According Hawaii’s Official Tourism Website, it is also a great location to look for humpback whales.

4 – Waipio Valley

Most people think of Oahu or Maui when they think about the state of Hawaii. They imagine visits to Pearl Harbor, Waikiki, Kihei, or LaHaina. However, the Island of Hawaii is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands and has the most real estate and square acreage available. Hawaii is also the biggest and the most diverse island.

In fact, Hawaii is larger in square mileage than all of the rest of the Hawaiian Islands together. The Island of Hawaii also features five volcanoes. You may have heard about Kilauea on the news, as this volcano is very active. It is erupting almost continuously and pouring lava out into the ocean. The name of this town-Kailua-Kona-on the Big Island is hyphenated because the Island of Oahu also has a town named Kailua.

The infamous Kona coffee is grown on the sides and slopes of another volcano, the Hualalai volcano, at elevations of 1,000 feet on higher. Here the area is rainy because moist tropical air flows up from below and then condenses into precipitation. This coffee is also grown elsewhere on the island. The volcanic soil is rich and conducive to growing the famous beans due to this type of environment.

Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea are also two very well-known volcanoes on the Island of Hawaii. Both stretch upward more than 30,000 feet from the floor of the ocean, making them taller than Mount Everest if you actually consider that fact. From sea level, Mauna Loa is 13,680 feet high and Mauna Kea is 13,796 feet high. Perhaps you have heard about the Keck telescope that is located toward the top of Mauna Kea. Big Island Hawaii Vacation Rentals

Let me start with the Big Island, Hawaii.  Rolled into one pretty package, this island takes the best aspects of all the Hawaiian Islands, where only here you can go from the beach to a volcano and to the rain forest, all in one day.   It’s hard to top an island that offers all that.

But did you know that there are the many festivities and activities found on the island that will fill your vacation with memories to last a lifetime?

Something special for the film enthusiast , you don’t want to miss the Big Island Film Festival May 14-17. This festival features films for families as well as for mature audiences.   The festival will be screening independent narrative short and feature films.  And when it’s over, the Audience Choice for both the short and feature films are shown after a two-hour concert.

Next, you should make plans to visit Hilo for the 4th Annual Hilo Inter-Tribal Powwow, May 24-25.  The whole family will enjoy partaking in the festivities which include Native American singing, dancing, food and storytelling.

If you are a fan of the Triathlon, the 2009 Honu Triathlon on May 20,  is a qualifying event for the Ford Ironman World Championship which will bring fierce competition to the Big Island on May 30.  You can cheer your favorite athletes on at the Kohala Coast.  Then there is the Kona Marathon taking  place on June 28 and is open to everyone.

On May 23 & 24 the spotlight is on the Waimea Bonyu Kai Bonsai Clubs Annual Exhibition.  This is the island’s oldest bonsai club and they are proud to share more than 50 trees for your enjoyment.  If a bonsai garden is your passion, you could find some incredible information at this event.

What a treat to celebrate the 4th of July at the Annual Parker Ranch Rodeo.  Rodeo competition starts at 9a.m. and lasts until noon.  There are also children’s activities and traditional Hawaiian fare.  A 4th of July that the whole family will enjoy and remember for years to come.

Planning Your Big Island Hawaii Fishing Trip

Because of the rise in wellness tourism business owners on the Big Island of Hawaii have got together to promote a travel initiative that they collectively hope will prove so successful that it will eventually be adopted by the rest of the state.

The Hawaii Island Wellness Travel Association, composed of 120 business owners and holistic professionals, has set up a meeting with both the Big Island Visitors Bureau and Hawaii County officials to take the initiative further at which they hope to agree marketing strategies, develop effective packaging and adopt a set of rules for health and wellness travel to Hawaii, which they regard as a booming business.

As recently as 2005 almost $50,000 was set aside by Hawaii Tourism Authority to be used to quantify how well wellness tourism could be developed in the archipelago. A leading research company was approached to produce a comprehensive study of the health and wellness tourism market for the state of Hawaii. However, significant progress stalled once the report had been produced, and only now, some two years later, is the idea being re-launched.

One of the most vociferous proponents and advocates of wellness tourism Lew Whitney, co-founder of the Kokolulu Farm and Qigong Center based in North Kohala said: “We’ve been trying for years to persuade the Hawaii Tourism Authority that this (wellness) offers a great opportunity for the whole state of Hawaii and not just the Big Island.” Over the last nine years the Center has offered a range of cancer retreats and meditative healing programs and Whitney admits that it has been a struggle getting the message across to tourism chiefs. However, Whitney highlights that the Center, located on the northern tip of the Big Island, has been successfully trading for almost 10 years, and with little promotional help from the Hawaii Tourism Authority has managed to remain in business, albeit with the help of some charitable contributions.

Indeed, leading research group Mintel produced a comprehensive Market Research document which looked at wellness tourism being offered throughout the world in places as far flung as Japan, Hungary, India, Austria and Thailand. It concluded, amongst other things that markets were expanding as more and more people, of all ages, made their vacation choices based on health and wellness travel demonstrating that that the sector had a bright future.

As more people take to using alternative and natural remedies, tying wellness into hotel deals in Hawaii could herald a bold new initiative that in the long run may well add an extra string to the already well developed tourism bow for the state.

Big Island, Hawaii Promotes Health & Wellness Travel

As the natives (and longtime residents) like to say, there are only two seasons on the Big Island Hawaii: “summer,” between May and October, and “winter,” from October to April. The weather varies dramatically, though,–in terms of precipitation–from west to east. Hilo, on the east, or
“wet” side of Big Island, is the wettest city in the United States.

Big Island Hawaii’s “Kona” coast, (the dry west side), is the most popular destination. It offers accommodations and activities catering to the pure pursuit of FUN! Snorkeling, diving, kayaking and deep-sea fishing being the most popular.

The island is also famous for its volcanoes. Kilauea is the most active volcano in the world. At times you can Watch lava flowing across the landscape at Volcanoes National Park. On the days when the volcano is not erupting, you can explore its unique “lavascape”, with its vents spewing steam, its giant chasms and lava craters. Standing at just over 5,000 feet, Kilauea is not Big
Island’s tallest volcano, but it is certainly the most active.

For an aerial view of the Big Island, be sure to check out Blue Hawaiian or Tropical Helicopters in Hilo. Dedicated pilots will whisk you away and provide loads of nformation during the flight, including a literal “over-the-top” view of Kilauea Volcano!

And, for those wanting a water experience, trek over to Kona Boy Kayaks, past the 113 mile marker on Highway 11, and get the thrill of Big Island Hawaii–in a big way! There you can rent a kayak or go on a guided trip. Paddle atop the waves, skirting awesome cliffs and waterfalls, or snorkel and swim in a calm, protected cove — your choice. Perhaps you’ll see a few spinner dolphins as you paddle across Captain Cook monument.

Speaking of dolphins, the Hilton Waikola Village on the Big Island, has a program called Dolphin Quest. There, in the lagoon, kids and teenagers, and a few adults, can have the opportunity to swim with the several Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins. This program is nearly always full.
Reservations must be made at least 60 days in advance.

You can go even further by discovering the undersea world’s creatures and their habitat by visiting Atlantis Submarines, also in Kona. And there is also world class sports fishing off the Kona coast.

This area is known as the marlin capital of the world. Big game fish, including giant blue marlin and other Pacific billfish, tuna and swordfish are abundant in the waters off the coast. Hundreds of charter fishing boats operate out of the Kailua-Kona area where you can charter a boat with friends or join one of the daily shared charters.

The highest point on the isand is Mauna Kea, at 13,796 feet above sea level. Both the neighboring Maunu Loa and Mauau Kea and have some of the clearest air in the world. As a result, more than two dozen of the world’s finest telescopes are located there. Tours of the University of Hawaii Telescope are available every weekend.

There are many beaches on the Big Island. Pauoa Beach, at the Fairmont Orchid Hotel in the Mauna Lani Resort, is infused by natural freshwater springs that move beneath the ocean’s surface. It’s located on Hawaii’s Kohala Coast, on the northwest side of the island.

One of Hawaii’s best beaches, Hapuna Beach, is a landscaped 62-acre beach park. Swimming and other water sports are best enjoyed in summer months during calm seas. Winter surf can be rough. The beach is located on the Kohala Coast on the northwest side. The Hapuna Golf Course, part of the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, extneds from the shoreline to 700 feet above sea level, offering
both challenge and beauty.

Honaunau Beach, part of the historic Pu’uhonua o Honaunao National Park, offers a full range of family activities. The sanctuary name means a “place of refuge.”

A snorkeler’s delight, Kahaluu Beach Park, is located on the Big Island’s west coast. Visitors can explore a colorful variety of more than 100 types of tropical fish and marine life including sea turtles. A large coral reef both protects the lagoon and is home to these animals. A fresh water spring feeds up to 10 million gallons per day into the lagoon.

Kaunaoa Beach, also known as Mauna Kea, is bordered by a coconut grove and protected by two black-lava points. This beach sit directly in front of the Mauna Kea Hotel. The rugged surf makes Kaunaoa a bodysurfer’s and boogie boarder’s delight.

Close by, the Mauna Kea Golf Course is carved out of the volcano’s black lava, and is considered one of the top courses in the United States. The dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean and its shoreline cliffs seem to add to the challenge of the course.

The South Point on the Big Island is believed to be where the first Polynesians arrived from the Marquesas Islands or Tahiti around 500 A.D. And the island that they found has been luring visitors back for centuries. Will you be one of them?
